‘Right to Regenerate’ to turn derelict buildings into homes and community assets

On 16 January, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP, announced that the Government will make it simpler, quicker and easier for public to transform vacant land and derelict buildings into homes, businesses or community spaces.

Under the proposals, public bodies would need to have clear plans for land in the near future, even if only a temporary use before later development – if the land is kept for too long without being used, they would be required to sell it.

MHCLG are seeking views on the usefulness of the Right to Contest, as well as proposing a number of potential reforms. The consultation opened on 16 January 2021 and closes on 13 March 2021.
