The Hollingbourne War Memorial lists the names of 37 men from Hollingbourne who died for their country in World War I and the names of 12 men and 1 woman from Hollingbourne who died in World War II. Where possible links have been made to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website which provides more information.

If no link is provided, it means that it has not been able to identify the correct person on their Debt of Honour database although it does not necessarily mean that they are not listed by the Commonwealth Graves Commission as in many cases there is no information about their next of kin and place of residence  which makes it difficult to link the names with the Hollingbourne War Memorial. All Saints’ Churchyard is one of 12,000 UK cemeteries and graveyards which are listed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as the resing places of war victims.

In some cases it has been possible to precisely identify the names as “Hollingbourne” is mentioned and in other cases links have been made to the name on the Debt of Honour which has local connections in the hope that this is correct. Please advise the webmaster of any errors. Some additional information about many of the names listed is at http://www.hollingbournepc.kentparishes.gov.uk/default.cfm?pid=3032

The Hollingbourne War Memorial is maintained by the Leeds and Hollingbourne Branch of the Royal British Legion with occasional financial assistance from Hollingbourne Parish Council. For more information about the Branch, please follow the link :  http://www.leedskent.org.uk/rbl.htm

The Bearsted branch of the University of the Third Age which covers Hollingbourne has produced a guide to all local war memorials which includes information about the names listed. For more information please go to http://u3asites.org.uk/files/b/bearsted/docs/memoriallistslinks2.pdf

A New Zealand Flag hangs in Hollingbourne Church to mark the stay of New Zealand soldiers from the 22nd Wellington Battalion in the village during the autumn of 1940. The seventieth anniversary of their billeting in Hollingbourne was marked by a special church service in 2010. Many of the men  subsequently died in the battle for Crete. http://www.22battalion.org.nz The first New Zealand casualty was Private Ian Holms who was killed during an attack on Greenway Court and is buried in All Saints’ Churchyard.
