Last week Fields in Trust joined millions of people across the UK and the globe mourning the passing of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness was the charities President for an incredible 64 years and they are indebted to him for his decades of support. An inspiring leader who recognised the value of parks and playing fields The Duke was committed to ensuring that everyone, especially young people, had access to the wealth of positive opportunities they can provide.
His pledge in 1949 to make up for his lack of experience in ‘effort and industry’ was fulfilled in spades as he led a period of great growth for the charity overseeing numerous campaigns and increasing the portfolio of protected spaces from 430 to over 2000, before stepping down in 2013 and being succeeded by his grandson HRH The Duke of Cambridge.
